چکیده

For precise stress analysis of engineering materials by diffraction methods, the lattice spacing of strain-free materials, d0, must be accurately measured and determined. In this study, a new and easy technique of measuring the specimen is proposed which involves using the original material instead of its powder form for accurate estimation of d0 . The value of d0 obtained by our technique is estimated from dAve which is the average of d measured while rotating the specimen in random directions.

Neutron Larmor Diffraction for the Determination of Absolute Lattice Spacing

The Neutron Larmor diffraction method is applied for the first time to determine absolute lattice spacing of a Silicon powder and polycrystalline IN718 samples. The absolute value of lattice spacing can be measured to an accuracy of 7· 10A. However, absolute determination of the lattice parameter is limited by the quality of the reference specimen used. Absolute lattice spacing determined by La...

Neutron diffraction from sound-excited crystals

A longitudinal sound wave modulates the regular arrangement of the atomic planes of a crystal in two ways: first, the spacing between the atomic planes is modified in the regions of compression and expansion introducing a macroscopic strain and, second, the lattice planes acquire a velocity in the oscillating strain field. Bragg reflection in a strained crystal maintains the energy of the radia...

Analysis of Strain-induced Peak Broadening in Titanium Alloys

X-ray diffraction measurement in the bulk of engineering components allows evaluation of lattice spacing variation by application of Bragg law and hence, by comparison with a strain-free reference specimen, computation of elastic strains and stresses. Diffraction peak position is related to average elastic strain within the scattering grains, whilst diffraction peak shape is related to crystall...

A Neutron Diffraction and Modeling Study of Uniaxial Deformation in Polycrystalline Beryllium

The deformation of polycrystalline beryllium to strains of 60.8 pct in uniaxial tension and compression was studied by neutron diffraction and modeled using an elasto-plastic self-consistent (EPSC) model. The beryllium response is asymmetric with respect to tension and compression in both the macroscopic behavior, as displayed in the stress/strain curve, and the microscopic lattice response. Th...
